These days I use a digital darkroom and am continuously astonished at
the power and flexibility of photo editing software. I still miss having a wet
darkroom, but for me those days have disappeared and will never come again.
I consider myself a “generalist” when it comes to photography, with subject interests that are like moving targets; one day
old buildings, another scenics. I’m the same way with techniques, HDR (High Dynamic Range) sometimes, or black and
white, selective focus at other times. That’s why you’ll find a variety of subjects and techniques on this site.
Currently I use Nikon equipment with a combination of Nikon, Tokina and Sigma lenses. My digital darkroom is comprised
of several software packages, including Lightroom 3, Photoshop CS5, Capture NX2, OnOne Perfect Layers, Photomatix
HDR software, Nik HDR Efex Pro and the Topaz for Lightroom and Photoshop. Each product has its strengths and
weaknesses.
“Photography is my passion” is a
common phrase heard among both
pros and amateurs, and though it’s
stating something that’s self-evident
(if you’re not passionate about it, why
do you have a website and a blog
related solely to this endeavor?) it’s
worth repeating. I’ve been involved in photography off and on for over
thirty years, starting in the mid-70s when I bought my first rangefinder,
a Yashica 35 Electro, and followed that with the purchase of my first
SLR, an Olympus OM-1. For a year or so I had a darkroom in my
basement, spending many pleasurable hours developing photos and
listening to classical music. It was a great way to escape everyday
demands.
